Praise

  • “Hunter gives us a vivid profile of a diverse and changing religious community. The book punctures many of the stereotypes that mar the discussion of American Evangelicals.” —Robert N. Bellah, coauthor of Habits of the Heart

  • “This book firmly establishes Hunter’s standing as the most astute sociological observer of American Evangelicalism. This is the sociology of religion at its best.” —Peter. Berger, author of Sacred Canopy: Elements of a Sociological Theory of Religion

  • “With this book Hunter establishes himself as a leading interpreter of American Evangelicalism. The book provides an impressive analysis not only of the coming generation of Evangelical leaders but also of the dynamic ways in which the Evangelical tradition has responded to the challenges of American culture. I strongly recommend it, especially to those who think they already understand the Evangelical religion.” —Robert Wuthnow, author of Why Religion is Good for Democracy
